CORROBOREE

Corroboree was my first design commission, and it came from Bill and Marilyn McBain of Gibraltar, Michigan.  Corroboree is a free-standing sloop designed for Western Red Cedar strip planking and Mahogany veneers to Lloyd’s Rules for Yachts.  Corroboree was built in New Zealand in 1986-87 while the McBain’s were living in Australia.  The mast was built in New Hampshire, and it 1988, mast and boat arrived together at the eastern end of Lake Erie where the McBains put all the pieces together.  She has been sailing the Great Lakes ever since.  Study plans are US$20.00 (US$25.00 for overseas airmail).  The complete plan set is US$400.00 (US$440.00 for overseas airmail).

Says owner Bill McBain, “It was remarkable.  She exceeded our highest expectations because I know we had put very stringent limitations on the design.  But she puts herself on the wind.  You trim her up and she stays there.  She is ladylike and beatuiful.”

In February, 1989, Sail magazine called  her the “Lady of the Lakes.”  And then, in January, 1993, Sail named Corroboree one of the 100 greatest sailing yachts of North America

Cruising World had this to say about Corroboree in April, 1986:

“Sponberg has managed to fit an extraordinary amount of accommodations into this 35-foot hull.”

Corroboree was designed before the age of the desktop computer, so all of the drawings are done by hand.  Full-size Mylar patterns are not available, so the hull, deck, rudder and keel have to be lofted by hand from the lines plans.  There are complete lines for the hull, deck, rudder and keel.
