In “Some thoughts on the state of the art,” there is a basic description of why free-standing masts and wingmasts make sense, and how they are designed and built.  On the remaining pages are some details of some recent mast design projects:

Some thoughts on the state of the art

Some aerodynamics, some naval architecture, and a funny little history of sailboat rigs.  If free-standing rigs make such good sense, why don’t we see more of them?  It is all explained right here.

Wobegon Daze

An award-winning free-standing wingmast design.  This Freedom 38 has gone through extensive modifications, and the rig represents the latest in our wingmast designs.

Copernicus

The one and only retrofit mast project we have ever designed.  This owner did everything right and took a lot of care to build his mast.  The new rig greatly improved the performance of his boat.

Nai’a

This unusual project was interesting because the mast was built on the beach in Fiji, and the builders used only wood and epoxy, no carbon fiber at all.  The mast is not free-standing, but it is the tallest wood-epoxy wingmast in the world.
